As Knoxville continues to grow, expect to see more buildings and businesses coming to the downtown area.

WVLT reports that a 17-story high-rise apartment has been proposed for Downtown Knoxville, which would be located on the corner of W. Hill Ave. and Locust St., and extend down towards the river. The building would be 12 stories of apartments atop a 5-story parking garage. The proposal includes 290 units for 400 renters.

However, a petition has already circulated opposing this idea. “Keep Knoxville Charming” has 700 signatures thus far (and counting). According to the petition, adding this high-rise

…threatens to overshadow the unique charm and character… A building of this scale and design would erode Knoxville’s authentic design and gives nothing back to our community.

The group also fears this new development will increase and make traffic worse.

Due to the petition, the City of Knoxville Design Review Board decided to postpone the decision on moving forward. The review board says they need more information from the developer on how they plan on addressing pedestrian safety and engineering standards.
