Netflix did it. Disney is doing it. And now, Costco.
What do all these companies have in common? They don’t want you to share.
Costco members are used to walking in and just flashing their membership card at a worker when they enter, and then going about their shopping. However, that will soon be changing. As the big-box store is making sure members aren’t sharing their cards with non-members they will be implementing scanners at the door.
According to Costco,
Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse. Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner*. Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry.
If a non-member wants to shop at Costco they must be with a member. The member is limited to two guests. The retailer makes sure to add that only a member can make the purchase.
Unfortunately, this also means that us non-members will no longer be able to use the food court anymore. So the days of going in to get a couple slices of pizza or a hot dog, and leaving, are over.
Membership prices will also go up beginning September 1st. All the levels will increase by $5 while the Executive level will go up by $10.
