Last week, the popular meat brand, Boar’s Head announced a recall of 207,000 lbs. of deli meat due to listeria concerns. Now, that recall has been expanded to an additional 7 million pounds.

The announcement was made on Tuesday (7/30) saying that a variety of ready-to-eat deli and poultry products are affected.

This expansion includes 71 products produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024, under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names. These items include meat intended for slicing at retail delis as well as some packaged meat and poultry products sold at retail locations.

The products were shipped to retailers all across the country.

Listeria was first discovered by the Maryland Health Department after collecting a sample of liverwurst. They found that this was connected to the nationwide outbreak of listeria amongst deli meat.

According to the press release, as of July 30th, 34 people have been sickened in 13 states; 33 were hospitalized, and two people have died.

The Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) and CDC have an ongoing investigation related to the recall.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract.

Listeria is especially harmful to pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems.

A list of all the recalled Boar’s Head products can be seen here, and pictures of the labels here. If you have any of the recalled items, you’re asked to throw it out and clean out your fridge, as the bacteria can spread to other foods.
