May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this is great news for the city of Knoxville.

A new mental health facility is opening next month in North Knoxville which will operate like an urgent care but for mental health services.

WATE reports that this facility is a first of its kind in Tennessee. The McNabb Center is opening the unit dubbed EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing).

…will provide immediate access to psychiatry for evaluation and medication.

The unit will be open 24/7, 365 days a year and will provide an alternative place to go as opposed to the emergency room. There will be a nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, or a prescriber on site at all times. Patients will even be allowed to stay overnight, and then be provided with a mental health care plan before leaving. Candace Allen, the McNabb’s Clinical VP, said,

they’re going to be leaving with a plan of hope instead of just walking out the door without anything.

The only qualification is you have to be age 18 or up to be treated.

The EmPATH Unit at the McNabb Center opens June 3rd. They’re located at 1515 St. Mary Street.

The center is also hiring for LPN’s, psychiatric nurses, health technicians, and counselors. More info available here.
