It’s begun! Spring has sprung and so have the cicadas.
For the first time since 1803, two different broods are emerging at the same time, meaning there will be way more cicadas than usual from the southeast up to the midwest.
There have already been reports of sightings in South Carolina, but in one particular county, its gotten so bad that residents have started calling the police.
On Tuesday, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook that they have been getting calls from people concerned about loud sounds like a “siren,” “whine” or “roar.” However, the noises aren’t an emergency. They’re actually male cicadas making mating sounds, or as the sheriff’s office put it… “the sounds of nature.” Unfortunately, not all of nature is great.
