It’s officially the end of an era. Netflix is ready to say goodbye to its DVD-by-mail service. The service will be shipping out its final discs on Friday, with all but five distribution centers closed. Just less than one-million people are still subscribed to the service, and will get to keep these final discs.
From Day One, we knew that DVDs would go away, that this was transitory step,
former CEO Marc Randolph said in an interview.
Netflix has been sending out DVDs in the mail for the last 25 years. The first to be sent out was Beetlejuice. At its peak, it had 16 million subscribers which is a lot, but far less than the 238 million who currently have a Netflix streaming account (per AOL).
I remember my college roommates and I ordering DVDs from Netflix and having movie nights; the first one we rented was Paranormal Activity. It’s crazy to think about their progression over the years and how they completely changed the game and set the precedent for streaming.
Do you still watch DVDs, or do you solely rely on streaming? What memorable movies did you order from Netflix’s DVD service?
