Rarest Giraffe in the World Born at East TN Zoo

rare-giraffe

One of the world’s rarest creatures is living just a drive away from us!

On July 31, Brights Zoo in Limestone, TN (about 1 ½ hours away from Knoxville) welcomed a baby giraffe but what makes this one different from other giraffes is that she was born completely spotless… without the typical patterns that giraffes have.

The last known occurrence of this was in Tokyo, Japan in 1972 meaning that this baby giraffe is currently the ONLY solid giraffe in the entire world.

According to zoo officials, she was immediately welcomed by her herd and is thriving. At just a month old, she’s already standing at 6-feet tall.

At the moment, this rare majestic creature doesn’t have a name but the zoo is leaving it up to the public to decide between 4 options (with their meanings):

  1. Kipekee – Unique
  2. Firyali – Unusual or Extraordinary
  3. Shakiri – She is most beautiful
  4. Jamella – One of great beauty

You can vote on their Facebook page or on TODAY show’s website. The winning name will be announced on Labor Day, September 4th.

If you’re interested in actually visiting, the zoo is updating with the latest information here, including the best times to see the giraffes based on heat and weather.
