Logic’s 2017 song “1-800-273-8255,” which is titled after the phone number of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, has been credited with preventing actual suicides. According to a recent study published in The BMJ (British Medical Journal), during three significant moments of public attention surrounding the song, there was a 5.5 percent reduction in suicides among 10- to 19-year-olds in the United States. The first 34 days after the song’s release, as well as Logic’s performances of “1-800-273-8255” at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards and the 2018 Grammy Awards, are among them. Based on a related model across the same time periods, this amounts to 245 fewer suicides.
