In a surprising and controversial move on New Year’s Eve, Nicki Minaj made headlines by refusing to perform her chart-topping hit, “Starships,” during a live performance. The artist, known for her outspoken nature, took the opportunity to express her disdain for the song, labeling it as “stupid.”
In a video posted to TikTok, Nicki starts off with a few lyrics of the song before abruptly stopping and making the DJ cut the song off. She addressed the audience saying,
I don’t perform that song no more, y’all. I don’t like it, what y’all want me to do? Stupid song.
You can hear the disappointment in the crowds voice, which isn’t a surprise considering the song was one of Nicki’s most popular. “Starships” was a commercial success and performed well on the charts, worldwide.
This isn’t the first time Nicki has shared her disdain with the song. In 2020 interview with Pollstar Live, she said “I hate Starships.”
I mean ew, ‘Starships?’ I’m like, ‘Why did I do that?’ I really think that every time I hear it.
She also admitted she wasn’t a fan of “Your Love” or “Anaconda” anymore.
You can see the video below of Nicki stopping her performance.
