As a new mom, I know that diapers are a big expense, but a necessary one. To help families with the costs of this necessity, Tennessee is about to become the first state in the nation to offer free diapers to families through a Medicaid agency.

TennCare made the announcement, on Tuesday, that anyone who has a child that’s a member of TennCare or CoverKids will qualify for the cost of up to 100 diapers per month. This applies to children 2-years of age and under. They say the diapers will be available through participating pharmacies.

According to the National Diaper Bank, 47% of U.S. families say they’re in need of diapers and 1 in 2 families cannot afford enough diapers.

These babies are more vulnerable to painful rashes and urinary tract infections and have more trips to the doctor.

TennCare says they are working on finalizing the details before providing further information on how to sign up and obtain the free diapers. The program will go into effect in August.
