‘Tis the season of holiday scammers and Amazon wants to make sure shoppers don’t get scammed ahead of the biggest shopping day of the year.
The company is warning customers about two prominent scams making the rounds.
The first is an email that appears to be from Amazon itself, warning that your account might be suspended and asking for personal information. The email is a fake and could contain harmful attachments.
The second scam reaches out to Prime members by phone or text asking them to confirm or cancel services – again, it’s a trick to try and get personal information like bank account numbers.
Both of these scams have been prevalent throughout the second half of the year.
The holiday shopping season brings “increased risk” of fraud, a company spokesman warns.
Amazon also offered some tips on how to protect yourself and avoid falling to a scam:
- Go through Amazon’s own website for customer service or tech support.
- Don’t trust anyone telling you to “act quickly”
- Double check the url i.e. misspellings
- Check the full sender address to make sure there are no misspellings or substituted characters. Legit Amazon emails contain “amazon.com.”
